When a Workplace Injury Affects More Than Your Physical Health
A workplace injury can affect much more than your body.
Whether you’re recovering from a physical injury, coping with chronic pain, experiencing anxiety about returning to work, or struggling after a traumatic workplace event, the emotional impact can make recovery feel even more challenging.
You may find yourself experiencing:

Trauma or post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSD)
Chronic stress or emotional exhaustion
Sleep difficulties
Reduced confidence
Difficulty managing chronic pain
Concerns about your future or career
Feeling disconnected from work, family, or daily life
These reactions are common—and with the right support, recovery is possible.
Choosing the Right Psychologist Matters
If you’ve been referred for psychological treatment through the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), you may be asked to choose from a list of approved providers.
That decision can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already coping with the effects of an injury.
Research consistently shows that one of the strongest predictors of successful therapy is the quality of the relationship between a client and their therapist.
At The Mindful Living Centre, we believe finding the right fit is one of the most important first steps in recovery.
We take time to understand your goals, preferences, personality, and recovery needs so we can recommend the psychologist or therapist we believe is best suited to support your journey.
Our goal isn’t only to help reduce symptoms and facilitate a return to work.
We aim to help you build practical skills that support confidence, resilience, emotional well-being, and long-term success—so the progress you make continues well beyond therapy.
Our Approach
Beyond Healing — Toward Thriving
We believe recovery is about more than feeling better. It’s about helping you regain confidence, reconnect with what matters most, and develop practical skills that continue supporting your health, work, relationships, and overall well-being.
Science Meets Compassion
Your care is personalized, collaborative, and grounded in evidence-based psychology, while delivered with warmth, empathy, and genuine human connection.
Care That Continues
Recovery doesn’t stop when a therapy session ends. Through thoughtful follow-up, educational resources, and ongoing support, we strive to help you stay informed, motivated, and equipped for continued growth.
When WSIB May Support Psychological Treatment
Depending on your claim and WSIB eligibility decisions, psychological treatment may be available for concerns such as:
Psychological reactions following a workplace injury
Traumatic workplace events
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Anxiety related to recovery or returning to work
Depression following an accident or occupational illness
Chronic pain
Concussion-related emotional difficulties
Chronic or traumatic mental stress
Mental health concerns affecting first responders and public safety personnel
Eligibility and funding decisions are made by WSIB. Your case manager can explain the coverage available for your specific claim.
Our Approach to Recovery
Every person’s recovery journey is different.
Rather than following a one-size-fits-all treatment plan, we tailor care to your unique experiences, strengths, goals, and circumstances.
1. Understanding Your Story
We begin by understanding how your injury has affected your work, relationships, daily life, and emotional well-being while learning about the goals that matter most to you.
2. Understanding What May Be Slowing Recovery
Together, we explore the thoughts, emotions, behaviours, workplace factors, pain, sleep, and other challenges that may be affecting your recovery.
3. Building Practical Skills
Depending on your needs, therapy may incorporate evidence-based approaches such as:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Trauma-focused therapies
- Mindfulness-based approaches
- Chronic pain psychology
- Stress management
- Emotion regulation
- Sleep improvement strategies
4. Supporting Long-Term
Well-Being
Our goal extends beyond helping you recover from your current injury.
We aim to help you develop practical psychological skills that continue supporting your work, relationships, and overall well-being long after treatment has ended.
The Recovery Wheel
Recovery after a workplace injury often involves much more than reducing symptoms.
The different aspects of recovery are closely connected. Improvements in sleep may reduce pain sensitivity. Greater confidence can make returning to work feel more manageable. Better emotional regulation may strengthen relationships at home and at work.
Rather than treating one challenge in isolation, we work collaboratively to understand how these different pieces fit together so recovery becomes more sustainable over time.

Returning to Work with Confidence
Returning to work often involves much more than being medically cleared.
Many people experience uncertainty about their abilities, fear of re-injury, reduced confidence, workplace anxiety, or concerns about balancing recovery with the demands of their job. These reactions are common and understandable, particularly after a significant injury or psychologically challenging workplace experience.
When appropriate, therapy may help you:
Rebuild confidence following an injury or difficult workplace experience
Manage fears related to returning to work
Develop practical coping and stress management strategies
Improve emotional resilience during recovery
Strengthen communication with supervisors, coworkers, or family members
Navigate workplace stressors more effectively
Establish realistic expectations for recovery and return to work
Build habits and psychological skills that support long-term success and well-being
Every return-to-work journey is unique. Our approach is collaborative and individualized, helping you move forward at a pace that aligns with your goals, strengths, and circumstances.
Can I Choose My Own Provider?
Many injured workers wonder whether they can choose their own psychologist or therapist.
Depending on your claim and WSIB authorization, you may have the opportunity to choose from approved providers. Questions regarding approved providers, funding, and available options should be discussed directly with your WSIB case manager.
When choosing a psychologist or therapist, it can be helpful to consider questions such as:
Do you have experience working with workplace injuries or psychological injuries?
Have you worked with clients experiencing trauma, chronic pain, anxiety, depression, or return-to-work concerns?
What evidence-based treatment approaches do you use?
Are virtual appointments available if my circumstances change?
How do you communicate with WSIB when required?
How is confidentiality managed?
What happens if I don’t feel my therapist is the right fit?
Finding the right therapeutic relationship can make a meaningful difference in your recovery experience.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need WSIB approval before starting therapy?
Coverage requirements vary depending on your claim. If you are seeking WSIB-funded treatment, your case manager can explain the authorization process, approved treatment pathways, and available coverage.
Can I continue seeing my own psychologist?
Depending on your claim and WSIB approval, this may be possible. Your WSIB case manager can explain the options available for your specific circumstances.
Can therapy help with both emotional recovery and return-to-work concerns?
Yes. When appropriate, therapy may address emotional well-being while also helping you develop practical skills that support confidence, resilience, coping, and a successful return to work.
Can I receive therapy virtually?
Many services can be provided virtually, depending on clinical appropriateness and WSIB program requirements.
What information may be shared with WSIB?
When treatment is funded through WSIB, certain reports or progress updates may be required. Your clinician will explain what information may be shared, why it is required, and how confidentiality is managed.
What if I don't feel my therapist is the right fit?
Research consistently shows that the therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of successful therapy.
If, after beginning treatment, you don’t feel your clinician is the right fit, we encourage open discussion with your therapist or our intake team. When appropriate, we can explore whether another clinician within our practice—or another trusted professional in the community—may better meet your needs.
